Character Modelling, Environment Design and Animation

  • Model 3 - 5 Characters (Blender)

  • 1-6 Environment Design (Unreal Engine)

  • Animate all characters with stories

Lily (CARTOON)

For this TechHub Project, I plan to make a simple original character. But since I'm not good at designing my own characters, I would ask my mentors for feedback. As a result, I got this Cartoon 'Kid-shows' style character!
Based on the story I imagined, she would look for a portal that would take her back home after getting lost in different worlds.
When making this character, I learned how to rig this character without Youtube videos, a bit about color theory, and human topology.
Challenge:
It's my first time modelling Cartoon eyes so it's hard for me to rig it. The Iris and the Sclera are both planes(planes are flat, it's not a sphere) so I used the Shrinkwrap modifier to move it instead (I still want to control the eyes with a rig though...).
Next Steps:
Complete rigging and fixing the weight paint of the character by adding rigify rig samples for the skirt, ponytail, bow, and some hair strands using the 'tail' rigify sample.

Little Girl

Another one of my characters for this project! According to the story I imagined, she would set sail from her disastrous island and head to a peaceful island on the other side. But beware a monster is lurking underwater.
This character is a bit close to done. All I have to do is to fix the weight paint for the dress and rig the hair.
While making this Character, I learned how to use curves in Blender to make simple custom hair, (Human) Rigging without any Youtube videos and modelling Human topology by myself.
Challenge:
Since this is my first time modelling a character wearing a dress, I am having trouble figuring out how to move the dress correctly. Modelling the hair is also challenging for this character since it's been a long time since I modelled hair. So my mentor sent me a Youtube video on how to make stylized hair using curves for 5 minutes. This tip also helped me in making Corgi's teeth.
Next Steps:
For the dress to move correctly, I will try adding rig samples (like a tail rig for capes, tails, hair, etc.) in the same way how I rig capes.

TechHub Exchange Reflections /
What I Like About TechHub Exchange

I'm happy that I'm able to try out Unreal Engine even though the project didn't end up as I wanted it to but I'm looking forward to focusing on Unreal Engine/Animation next semester (If it's in the next semester). They also provided some websites and software to help us with our projects such as Cascadeur(3d animation), Epic Dev Community(Unreal Engine), AmbientCG(Textures), and PolyHaven(Textures) which is very useful for future Character making. I'm really glad that I joined this program, I learned a lot of important things about Character making and Character Art portfolio stuff (Scroll down more to see what I learned so far). Lastly, I wanted to thank my kind mentors for helping me learn things that can help me in my future career..

Extra Things I Did:

Struggles In TechHub Exchange

Since softwares we use in TechHub(Unreal Engine) needs good computers to run, It's hard for me to open the software at home so I won't be able to work on it. Other than that, I don't have any major issues with TechHub.
